Minecraft's ray-tracing feature for Windows 10 has made its debut in beta just eight months after the feature first became available for users to test. The sandbox game's aesthetics have been changed by the addition of the ability to trace rays to NVIDIA's RTX graphic cards. As we discussed in our hands-on post earlier this year the realistic lighting, reflections and shadows this feature provides make Minecraft feel more immersive. While the game is blocky, the in-game sunlight appears real. Shadows and reflections can make it appear as if you're in the real world.
To be able to experience the benefits ray tracing brings to the game, you'll have to run it on a PC using a GPU from NVIDIA capable of ray tracing. Only maps and worlds that use a physical-based texture pack will benefit from the benefits. You don't have to perform anything to activate it since it's turned on by default. Others who don't have access to this feature will see the worlds with normal visuals.
NVIDIA announced that ray-tracing can put more demands on your GPU. So, it employs its DLSSAI rendering technology to ensure Minecraft runs at minimum 60 frames per second, at a resolution of 1080x 1920. More advanced GPU models (RTX 3080 and 3090) are able to run the game in 4K resolution with over 60FPS.
You can download worlds you can play using ray tracing on from the Marketplace or create your own using help from NVIDIA's starter pack for those who require. NVIDIA and Minecraft are also offering two new worlds for free: Colosseum RTX has already been released and Dungeon Dash RTX is expected to be available.
