When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. But it was a different game (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) because it didn't require you to go outside to participate in the mining and building game. Now, Mattel has added another fun aspect to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go cannot boast about: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figures cost priced at $5 each and include various of characters from Minecraft such as Steve, Alex and creepers and cows, ducks, and ducks. Each figurine is very cute on its own, however placing it against an NFC-capable device will grant specific abilities within Minecraft Earth for a certain amount of time, displayed by an indicator on the screen. You'll also get XP for signing up the mini in the game, as an additional incentive to collect them all (or borrow from friends).
The initial batch being released this spring includes 20 different minis, with 10 different abilities to pick from. Mattel also offers an accessory pouch that can be attached to your belt if you're looking to take your Minecraft Earth game with you on the move.
Mattel introduced new $3.50 blind-box minis themed to the classic Minecraft. They also have larger figures that measure 3.5 inches that tie in with the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity is particularly enjoyable as it's sized in a way that is comparable to the other toys, standing over six inches tall. https://a1cdn.net/ The 3.5-inch figurines cost $10 and the monstrosity will be priced at $25 when it's launched in the fall.
