Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Cause'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft will not be allowed to purchase game content such as worlds, skins, persona items and other mods through NFTs.

Mojang Studios, a Minecraft developer, announced yesterday (20 July) that NFTs are against the game's core values in a clearly written blog post on the Minecraft website.



"NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership that is based on exclusion and scarcity, which is in contradiction to Minecraft values of creativity, inclusion and playing with others," the company wrote.



"The speculation about pricing and investment mentality around NFTs take the focus away from the game and encourages profiteering. We believe this is not in line with the long-term enjoyment and the performance of our players."



Minecraft said that the announcement was made in response to members of the community who asked for clarifications on Minecraft's position on NFTs and blockchain.



The change means that, unlike other virtual world games Minecraft does not allow blockchain integrations into its server and client applications. In-game content like worlds, skins, persona items, and mods will not be built upon NFTs.



Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business It also said it was concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs aren't reliable and could result in a cost to those who purchase them. It also outlined scenarios in which third-party NFT managers could "disappear suddenly" or NFTs could "be sold at inflated or fraudulent prices".



"We recognise that creation inside our game is intrinsically valuable, and we strive to create a market where those values can be recognised."



Online gaming has seen an increase in interest in blockchain technology such as NFTs. This issue was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.



Companies such as GameStop have expressed their confidence in NFTs as a significant aspect of the future of gaming, and have launched their own NFT marketplace.



Other companies aren't yet going all-in. EA's CEO previously said NFTs and blockchains could be the future of gaming, but he recently added: "Right now, it's not something we're pushing to the wall".
