Getting dressed can be a challenging task for people with dementia, and it's one of many basic functions that Alzheimer's can make difficult for patients. dementia wandering at night Now researchers from New York University have come up with a high-tech dresser they call "DRESS" that could offer them some guidance and support. The prototype furniture uses sensors, a camera and image recognition technology to provide individualized assistance in the dressing process. The system is activated and monitored by a caregiver via an app, and the person with dementia receives an audio prompt recorded in their caregiver's voice to open the top drawer, which simultaneously lights up. The clothing in each of the five drawers has bar codes that are detected by the DRESS camera, which can then identify the garment and determine if it is being put on correctly. The DRESS system also monitors indicators like skin-conductance sensors in a bracelet worn by the person, and if there are ongoing issues or an increase in stress levels it alerts the caregiver to assist.
The researchers say that the intent of DRESS is to "integrate typical routines and humanized interactions, promote normalcy and safety, and allow for customization to guide people with dementia through the dressing process." And while the smart dresser still needs some work -- it's not yet available to consumers and the research team is working on improving its vision system as well as standardizing and enlarging clothing labels, among other things -- this is just the latest in an emerging class of aids designed to help aging adults remain independent and safe in their homes for as long as possible. gps for dementia patients
