Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a new action-adventure game, Minecraft Legends. The game will be released in 2023 and asks players to explore Minecraft in the midst of being invaded by an evil force.
Mojang studios, part of Microsoft which is the company behind Minecraft has described this latest game as a familiar but in many ways a new experience that is more focused on strategy and combat. The original Minecraft game was released in 2011. It allows players to build and explore while sometimes fighting zombie-like creatures.
Microsoft announced that you are the focal point of any battle you take on, fighting alongside allies and giving them direction" in an announcement teaser. Microsoft said it collaborated with Blackbird Interactive, which also developed the upcoming space strategy game Homeworld 3.
Just the fact that Minecraft Legends comes from a popular title doesn't guarantee success, though. Minecraft is a wildly popular video game, right up with Super Mario Bros., Grand Theft Auto and Tetris. But its efforts to go past that hit formula have been sporadic.

Minecraft Dungeons, an action-adventure game in Minecraft's style was met with mixed reviews when it debuted two years ago, according to an analysis by Metacritic. Another CNET corporate counterpart, GameSpot, gave the game an "good" review, noting that the biggest issue was that Minecraft Dungeons focused on fighting monsters instead of providing a fresh take on the game's original formula of creating a world. GameSpot's Steve Watts stated that the game isn't changing our expectations of what games should be. Instead, it's banking on its own popularity.
Microsoft announced Minecraft Legends at its annual summer video game showcase, which is being held online this year. The game will made available next year on Xbox, PC and cloud gaming.
