Epilepsy Seizure Monitor
An epilepsy seizure monitor is a device that is designed to detect if someone has seizures, and then alerts carers or emergency medical services. This can give people with epilepsy and their loved ones peace of mind, helping them to live their lives safely and independently.

There are a wide range of different types of epilepsy seizure monitors, including pressure mats placed under the mattress and wearable devices that can be worn around the wrist. They can be very expensive, and some may require monthly or yearly subscriptions, so it’s important to shop around before making a purchase.

Several studies have looked at movement monitoring in patients with epilepsy, using pressure sensor mats placed under the mattress and infra-red cameras that detect changes in haemoglobin oxygenation in the blood, which can indicate seizure activity. However, these devices are very variable in their success in detecting seizures, and some of them were not corroborated by EEG monitoring [6].

Another study evaluated a nocturnal myoclonic jerk detection alarm using video surveillance that was also corroborated by EEG. They found that the device was not very effective at detecting nocturnal myoclonic tremors (n = 8), but was good at detecting tonic clonic seizures (n = 79).

Other methods for seizure detection include accelerometry and heart rate monitoring. These have lower false alarm rates than EEG-based methods but they have higher limits of agreement when motion artifacts are present, which can make them difficult to use for automated seizure detection in a home setting. emfit seizure monitor
