Benzene, Butadiene, and Other Carcinogens on the Railroad
Many railroad workers are exposed to benzene butadiene and other carcinogens on the job. You may be entitled to compensation when you've developed an illness that is serious, such as leukemia.
Leukemias occur in blood-forming tissue such as bone marrow and lymphatic tissue. CLL (chronic lymphocytic Leukemia) is one of the four major forms of adult leukemia.
lung cancer settlements is a chemical that can be absorbed or inhaled through the skin. It is an oil-based by-product that is utilized in the manufacture of resins, plastics, synthetic fibers and nylons. It is also used in lubricants, dyes, detergents, paints, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. It is a carcinogen that causes leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic diseases and lymphomas.
Railroad workers are exposed to benzene through the use of mineral spirits, solvents, and degreasers. They are also often exposed to exhaust fumes and diesel fuel when working on locomotives, freight cars and other railway equipment. Railroad workers are at a higher risk of developing chronic lymphocytic leukemia due to the exposure.
A number of epidemiologic studies have found a significant increase in leukemia risk as a result of an increase in exposure to benzene. A recent meta-analysis of 22 studies gave summaries of effects estimates for benzene exposure and the risk of AML or Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
The results of the meta-analysis indicate that occupational benzene exposure significantly increases the risk of developing these leukemias. However the results for AML and CLL were lower than for ALL. This may be due to a lower level of reporting for the two subgroups, and also due to the absence of dose-response relationships with increasing exposures. The meta-analysis found no evidence of bias in publication.
Asbestos
Asbestos, a fibrous mineral, has been used to create thousands of industrial products. Its resistance to heat, fire and corrosion made it an ideal material for railroad locomotives as well as other equipment. Asbestos can pose a threat for those who work with it. When asbestos fibers are exposed, they break down into tiny strands that can then can then become airborne. They can then be inhaled and can lodge deep in the lungs of an individual. They can lead to a range of serious illnesses, such as mesothelioma.
Asbestos fibers can irritate the lining of the lung when they enter the lungs. This irritation can cause a buildup of collagen that gets harder over time, and forms plaques in the pleura. This condition can cause chest discomfort and breathing problems.
Pancreatic cancer settlement is another type of lung damage that could be caused by asbestos exposure. This scar tissue can interfere in the ability to breathe. This condition can be fatal if it is not treated.
If you are a railroad worker who was diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, seek out a FELA lawyer immediately. A mesothelioma lawyer with experience can help you file an application for compensation. In lung cancer settlements to be successful in a claim you must prove that exposure to a toxic substance during the job caused your condition. FELA lawyers often work with industrial safety experts called industrial hygienists who review the materials in the railroad workplace and determine if the railroad company followed proper workplace safety procedures.
Diesel Exhaust
Railroad workers frequently encounter carcinogenic substances and fumes during their work, including diesel exhaust. Diesel exhaust exposure has been linked with mesothelioma, lung cancer and a variety of other serious occupational diseases among railroad workers. Inhaling particulates from engine exhaust could lead to long-term health issues that are difficult to treat.
Locomotives are powered by diesel fuel and the cab for locomotives is a small space with limited ventilation. CSX Transportation settlement can be breathed in by railroad workers, and it may also be dragged back onto themselves and their clothing when they leave the cab of the locomotive. Railroad workers working in yards and shops can also be exposed to diesel exhaust, as they frequently come into contact with locomotives and train equipment.
Diesel exhaust is believed to contain mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds that can be absorbed into bloodstream. These chemicals can cause damage to the respiratory system and blood and bone marrow. In a study which tracked dozens of workers who were repeatedly exposed to diesel exhaust, researchers found that those with the longest duration of exposure were at the highest risk for lung cancer.
Even after controlling for smoking and other risk factors the mortality rate for lung cancer was significantly higher among railroad workers exposed to diesel emissions. The Lyon Firm is investigating claims from railroad workers who claim to have been sickened by exposure to diesel exhaust and other industrial toxic substances.
