Guy Fieri has grown from selling pretzels, to one of the most popular cable television stars. His hit show Diners, Drive Ins and Dives is a great example. Since 2006, the show has featured over 648 restaurants. It is estimated that Discovery's HGTV channel and Food Network will generate $230 million worth of ad revenue by 2020. The self-proclaimed "Diners' Drive-Ins and Divas" host signed a multiyear contract recently that pays more than $8million per episode. That figure dwarfs what Discovery normally offers top hosts, like Emeril lagasse.
Producers carefully examine restaurants hoping to receive a Triple D feature. Fieri told Food Network Magazine, that a restaurant needs to have a good story, food and character. The show's team creates a list and then sends it on to the host. Also, he explains that unique techniques or ingredients can help make a spot standout. Some hosts have shown interest in the intricate barbecue methods or secret family recipes.
During filming a restaurant is usually closed for a few weeks while the crew setup equipment and capture B-roll. As the cooking segments usually take a half day, it is important that all of the menu items are prepared. Restaurants also have to offer Fieri a couple of dishes prior to filming. Fieri will try all the food at a restaurant before filming begins, except for dishes containing liver or eggs.
