Every round, the rules of the grocery shop are changed. The restrictions of the game can vary. They may include: a set time limit for shopping, a list of mandatory ingredients, a list that lists which aisles you cannot enter, or monetary limits.
Chefs also face the constant threat of a "reversal", where a rule changes mid-game and the rest of the chefs are forced to follow the original rules. It is used to create sudden death situations or to introduce a new dish to the three final judges.
Some of the other grocery-store challenges include: Logo Lowdown: The chefs are given a series of clues regarding a brand's name and must select one of three options that is correct. Grocery Pictogram - The chefs have to identify a specific product by looking at a series of images that are gradually zoomed out. Vowel Play: A product's name is displayed with vowels removed, and then slowly filled in. Market Multiple Choice: Chefs must choose the right answer from three choices displayed on screen. Each option corresponds to an individual question that Fieri reads.
For those who are not as frugal, the Frugal Shopper has chefs prepare gourmet meals using ingredients that they have purchased in a short time. The chefs are up against the clock, and every item's price is being scrutinized.
In Raid the Fridge, a group is pitted against another to use fridge magnets and raid mystery refrigerators containing ingredients, recipes and artwork that they will need to work with in a fast-paced competition. The teams have only a few moments to gather their groceries. Once the time has passed, they must use the ingredients found in the fridges to create a delicious dish.
The five Triple G Judges face the most difficult games ever played on the show in this special episode. The first Triple G Judge eliminated will receive a trip to finals, and the remaining three judges must play three of the most difficult Flavortown games ever. The tournament winner is then announced.
