Inhabitat's Week for Green: Wind Farms and Algae Power as well as an Airplane made of Hemp

Inhabitat's friends recap the week's top green developments and green tech news every week. It's the Week In Green.

Highways are large, dark surfaces that absorb a lot of sunlight. It would be more sensible to make them solar-powered. Designer Daan Roosegaarde came up with this idea and it's now becoming a reality. Roosegaarde collaborated with Heijmans Infrastructure to install solar-powered glowing lines on a highway in the Netherlands. The project was a huge success and is expected to be extended to other areas of the country. Masdar is also building a windfarm of 50 megawatts for the Sultanate of Oman. It will be the largest in the Gulf states region. The wind farm will produce enough clean energy to power 16,000 homes, and will prevent 110,000 tonnes (121,254 tons) of carbon dioxide from being burned each year. Primrose Solar and Solarcentury are working together in the UK to construct a 48 megawatt solar farm in Portsmouth. They want to make it the most eco-friendly ground mounted solar farm in the world. Are you thinking that algae is just slime that's green? You're wrong: This natural resource can power anything from the light bulb to an entire city. Here are a few of the most innovative designs powered by algae that could transform the world.

A few years ago, BMW and Daimler announced plans to collaborate to develop a low-cost, safe electric car. This week, the Visio.M is a tiny two-seater that weighs just 800 pounds, will be shown to the public for the first time at the eCarTec trade event in Munich. In other green transportation news, last week , Inhabitat was among two teams who completed the challenge of driving 834 miles using one tank of diesel fuel in the 2015 Audi A3 TDI, proving that it is possible to travel from Albuquerque to San Diego without refilling the tank. According to a couple from California the first hoverboard in the world has arrived. The pair claims that they've created a working hoverboard that uses electromagnetics to hover around an inch above the ground. For urban commuters, Vello Bike has designed a high-performance folding bike that requires just a single kick to fold and roll it into place, which means it's possible to take the bike with you on public transportation or store it without much hassle. In aviation news, Canadian company Hempearth is creating the world's first plane made of hemp. The plane is expected to be ready for flight next year.

3D printing has a lot of potential for the design industry However, it also poses some challenges for law enforcement, because it can allow people to create their own guns at home. A 28-year-old Japanese citizen was sentenced to three days in prison last week for 3D printing. He was found guilty of having two guns at home and sharing a video showing how others could do it. And Inhabitat was there when New York City held its first ever getgeeked conference this week. From 3D-printing pens to tablets that come with built-in projectors, take a look at some of the most useful tech innovations that were on display.

3D printing is already well-established in the fields aerospace and medical technology, however it is just getting used as a viable method of construction. At Maker Faire Rome, the World's Advanced Saving Project unveiled a brand new portable 3D printer that could be used to construct homes from clay, mud and fibers. The group plans to bring the technology to the most remote areas of the world. Design duo Micaela Collella and Maurizio Barbario have come up with plans for a prefabricated wood home. The foundation is made of a new steel and can be completely recycled. Philippe Starck, a French designer, recently joined with the duo to construct a brand new home powered by wind and solar. The home that is two stories tall, produces 50% more energy than it uses.

Many of our readers are creating Halloween costumes for their children. But few can match this amazing dad's illuminated LED stick figure costume that makes Zoey look like a glowing Minnie Mouse.
