Minecraft: Dungeons Preview

David Nisshagen is squealing with delight as he leads his blocky character down a narrow, raised platform surrounded by violet flames. He's just discovered a hidden room in Minecraft Dungeons, and even though he's the title's executive producer the player isn't sure what's going to happen. The smile on his face is visible on our Discord call.

He said, "This is very rare." "This is extremely rare. OK?" I laugh and tell him he sounds excited.

"Yes," he replies, "I haven't seen it in this level. This is incredible. Okay, so, as you see, we have several very scary and mysterious things to look at. I've just gathered something that will prove extremely, very helpful to me later on in the game, or even if I decide to play the game again."

Minecraft Dungeons is an adventure title inspired by classic dungeon crawlers like Diablo or The Binding of Isaac, but with the franchise's distinctive kid-friendly flair. Cryomail.Net It supports online and local multiplayer as well as randomly generated levels as well as a host of familiar enemies like creepers, skeletons, and spiders. The whole experience looks similar to Minecraft, but it represents an entirely fresh approach to game development for Mojang.

Microsoft purchased Mojang the Swedish studio that developed Minecraft for $2.5 billion in 2014. Currently, it is under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. This doesn't mean that Minecraft Dungeons will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms -- the full game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and Windows on May 26th.

For more than 10 years, Mojang has focused on Minecraft, the world-wide phenomenon that has introduced generations children and adults to sandbox-style video games. Minecraft Dungeons is the studio's first real attempt at an entirely new genre, and has been in production for at least four years.

The story is short yet appropriately epic. An outcast villager called an illager, finds an orb of power, which can be used to conquer the overworld. He has a group of villagers under his command. Players traverse different regions , fighting the Arch-Illager's gang, until finally facing off with the holder of the orb.

Mojang introduced illagers into the base Minecraft game in 2016 however Nisshagen stated that the creatures actually began in the Dungeons development room.

"We required an adversary that was humanoid, that had a ranged attack and an easy-follow hunting system," he explained. In the end, he said it was possible to run from the zombies in Minecraft, rather than fighting them or fighting them, and Dungeons developers wanted something that encouraged combat. "They do chase you with axes and chase you down, and this was so well-liked by the Minecraft team that they implemented it into the game before we even released Dungeons."

Dungeons was actually an internal concept of the Nintendo 3DS.

"You can't fit Minecraft an extremely complex game, onto this," Nisshagen said. That's why developers went with the top-down view instead of the original game's first-person viewpoint and they concentrated on creating a world filled with opportunities for surprise and exploration.

"You don't have the ability to play the entire Minecraft game," he said. "You should not make it easy and narrow on its primary elements. We have increased exploration and a feeling of adventure. Players should feel like they are in the middle of an adventure. And then we take the creativity that Minecraft players have when they design all the awesome stuff in the game. We try to let them utilize it in our progression system, I guess.

Minecraft Dungeons doesn't use a traditional, RPG-style progression system, and it doesn't force players to take on specific roles. Instead of having rigid classes like "healer" or "tank" in the game, players can change their gear on the fly and combine items to equip their weapons with any capabilities are needed in the current situation.

Nisshagen said, "You can think about changing the thought of progression into a sandbox." "There's absolutely no limitations. You can do almost whatever you want. There are some extremely bad choices you can make. However, there are also many good choices and strong decisions you can make.

There isn't a wrong method to play Minecraft Dungeons. This is essential for developers, especially considering the intended audience that Minecraft is aimed at: children and their parents. As the brand, Minecraft is geared toward younger players, whereas dungeon-crawler games are generally built for adults, and feature extensive inventories and progression trees and challenging combat arenas. Minecraft Dungeons is an attempt to appeal to both of these market segments.

"We think that we'll see parents playing with their children, or younger and older siblings playing together," Nisshagen said. The system is full of depth. Anyone with a degree of gaming experience is likely to discover interesting combinations of things to explore, from a game mechanics point of view. And then the other people, you can just go in and button-mash and have a great time as well."

The game has drop-in multiplayer both local and online and each stage is adapted according to the amount of players. TNT boxes are the sole exception to friendly fire, and can cause harm to both familiars and allies.

Cross-platform play won't be available until the launch, but it is "absolutely" possible in the future, Nisshagen stated.

"We're not a huge development team," he said (Mojang's About page lists 71 employees). "Just being able to release the same game to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and Windows, that is quite the thing actually. In addition, if we can offer cross-play, we'd like to have it as quickly as we can, but we want to make sure we have a good multiplayer experience on your personal platform first."

In many ways, Minecraft Dungeons is the natural evolution of the Minecraft franchise. For a lot of kids in the 2000s, Minecraft was the first game they played as it was easy to play, fun, social and intuitive. A decade on the gamers are looking for something more complicated, and Minecraft Dungeons is an obvious answer. It's an old-fashioned, well-known game.
