Benzene, Butadiene, and Other Carcinogens on the Railroad
Many railroad workers are exposed to carcinogens such as benzene, and other compounds. If you have developed a serious disease such as leukemia, then you may be entitled to compensation.
Leukemias originate in blood-forming tissues like bone marrow or lymphatic tissue. CLL (chronic lymphocytic Leukemia) is one of the four main types of adult leukemia.
Benzene
Benzene is a gas that can be breathed in, or absorbed through the skin. It is an oil-based by-product that is utilized in the production of resins, plastics nylons and synthetic fibers. It is also used in lubricants and dyes. It is a recognized cancerous substance that causes leukemia and other cancers, including acute myelogenous lymphoma (AML) and myelodysplastic diseases and lymphomas.
Railroad workers are exposed benzene due to the use of mineral spirits, solvents, and degreasers. They are also frequently exposed to diesel fuel and exhaust fumes when working on freight cars, locomotives and other rail equipment. Because of this exposure, railroad workers are at a greater risk of developing chronic leukemia.
A number of epidemiologic studies have found a significant increase in leukemia risk due to increasing exposure to benzene. A meta-analysis of 22 studies provided summary estimates of the effect of benzene on AML and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia(ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia(CLL).
The meta-analysis indicates that exposure to benzene in the workplace increases the chance of developing these leukemias. However the results for AML and CLL were less than those for ALL. This could be due to the lower rate of reporting for these subgroups but also due to the lack of dose-response with increasing exposures. The meta-analysis could not find any evidence of bias in the publication.
Asbestos
Asbestos, a fibrous mineral is utilized to make a myriad of industrial products. Its resistance to heat, fire and corrosion was a major reason for its use for railroad locomotives as well as other equipment. However, asbestos can pose an health risk for those who are handling it. When exposed to the substance, asbestos fibers can be broken down into tiny strands that become airborne. They can then be breathed in and can get trapped deep within a person's lungs. They can trigger a variety of serious illnesses, including mesothelioma.
Asbestos fibers could cause irritation to the lung lining when they enter the lungs. This irritation can lead to a buildup in collagen, which hardens with time and creates plaques in the pleura. This condition can lead to chest pain and breathing problems.
railroad settlements is yet another form of lung damage that can be caused by asbestos exposure. This scar tissue can interfere in the ability to breathe. This condition can be fatal if left untreated.
Contact an FELA lawyer immediately if you are a railroad employee who has been diagnosed with a condition related to asbestos. An attorney for mesothelioma can help you file for compensation. To be successful, you must prove that your exposure to a toxic substance on the job caused your condition. FELA attorneys frequently work with industrial safety specialists known as industrial hygienists in order to look over the materials in the railroad workplace and determine if the railroad adhered to proper occupational safety procedures.
Diesel Exhaust
Railroad workers frequently encounter carcinogenic fumes and substances on the job, such as diesel exhaust. Frequent exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to lung cancer as well as other serious occupational illnesses in railroad workers, such as mesothelioma, pulmonary fibrosis and others. Inhaling particulates and engine exhaust can cause long-term health problems that are difficult to treat.
Locomotives are powered by diesel fuel and the cab for locomotives is a confined space with limited ventilation. Diesel exhaust is inhaled by railroad workers, and it may be dragged onto the clothing and on their bodies when they leave the cab of the locomotive. Diesel exhaust is also an issue for railroad employees who work in shops or yards as they are frequently in contact with locomotives.
Diesel exhaust is believed to contain mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds that can be absorbed into bloodstream. These compounds can affect the bone marrow and blood and can cause damage to the respiratory tract. Researchers discovered that people who had been exposed to diesel exhaust for the longest amount of time were at the greatest chance of developing lung cancer.
Even after adjusting for smoking and other factors lung cancer mortality was significantly higher in railroad workers exposed to diesel exhaust. The Lyon Firm is investigating claims from railroad workers who claim to have been sickened by exposure to diesel exhaust and other industrial toxic substances.
