I like minecraft, a lot, on occassion. However, it needs a few tweaks for me to really enjoy it. Minecraft servers I'm planning to document them now:
The first step is to install mcpatcher, so we can use HD texture packs and install mods. Get it here: https://github.com/pclewis/mcpatcher/downloads

Next, we need to install the correct modifications.

So now that you have all appropriate mods downloaded, launch mcpatcher. You can add many mods to mcpatcher (Mods -> Add to the menu). Make sure to point it at your minecraft.jar. Should be located in ~/.minecraft/bin/.
Make sure that only the following modifications are checked, and ensure they appear in this order. If they aren't, use the arrows on the bottom of the GUI to rearrange them:
1. AutoSwitchMod
2. ModLoader
3. OptiFine
4. Custom Colors
5. Random Mobs
6. Connected Textures
7. Better Skies
Click on patch. mcpatcher will probably complain, but you can just click yes.
Finally we'll need a great texture package. I like this one: http://bdcraft.net/download-purebdcraft-texturepack-for-minecraft, 128 bit. Minecraft isn't capable of handling larger files. Download it and save the .zip to ~/.minecraft/texturepacks. It should now be possible to choose it from the game's menu.
