What is Tonic Clonic Seizure Disorder?
The term tonic clonic seizure disorder refers to a type of convulsion that occurs when a person's muscles go into an alternating, rhythmic jerking movement. This is often accompanied by a facial clonus.

When a person experiences tonic clonic seizures, they can be confused, sleepy, and lose control of their bladder and bowels. They may also experience bluish discoloration of their skin and muscles.

Tonic-clonic seizures are generally easy to diagnose. If they last more than five minutes, they are considered an emergency. Other tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Using video EEG monitoring can help identify the cause.

There are several types of tonic-clonic seizures. These include generalized, partial, and focal tonic-clonic seizures.

Generalized tonic-clonic seizures are generally easier to diagnose than other forms of seizures. The first 15 to 30 seconds of a seizure are usually characterized by muscle contractions, stiffening of the body, and loss of consciousness.

Partial tonic-clonic seizures are typically diagnosed by changes in mood and emotion, as well as changes in sensation. Focal tonic-clonic seizures are more difficult to diagnose.

Seizures can be prevented with proper medical treatment. Some people are well treated by antiepileptic drugs. Others need special medicines to stop further tonic-clonic seizures.

Antiepileptic medications can increase the risk of birth defects. However, they are usually effective for most people.
