Pocahontas Costumes
The life of Pocahontas has captured the imagination of people of all ages for over four centuries. Pocahontas was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, or Wahunsenacah (alternative spellings include Matoaka and Powhatan), and a member of the Powhatan Nation. Her Native name was Alonute or Amonute, meaning "flower between two streams." Her English name was Pocahontas, which means "rebellious one" or "mischievous."

While the Disney film portrays a young, spirited princess, the real life of Pocahontas is more complicated. Her relationship with the English settlers was fraught with danger and tragedy. This is not a fairy tale, but the story of an Indigenous woman who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by her colonizers.

Despite the hardships in her life, Pocahontas continued to be a source of hope for her community. Her kindness and generosity to the settlers earned her respect and friendship. pocahontascostume used her skills as a leader to advocate for her people's rights.
