The band was first formed in Lodi in New Jersey in 1977. Glenn Danzig, their primary frontman and songwriter was the same throughout all of the lineup changes. The group has a huge discography that includes remixes, live recordings, and hits albums.
Following the split with the Misfits Danzig continued to perform with his new band, Samhain. Samhain departed from punk and shifted their focus on experimental heavy-metal, with an edgier sound and mood. Samhain recorded a number of songs from the early Misfits albums which included Horror Business (and All Hell Breaks Loose).

Danzig recently filed a lawsuit against Jerry Only, his former Misfits bandmate, for shirt designs featuring the trademarked Crimson Ghost logo. The suit was dismissed by Central District of California Court judge Gary Klausner. Danzig claimed Only had signed contracts that included Hot Topic, for the selling of Misfits merchandise without his permission. The judge decided that the 1994 agreement that the group signed regarding profits earned from the Misfits logo did not require Only to obtain Danzig's consent.
