Since Bo Burnham's debut on YouTube and the progression of his stand-up comedy to live performances, several specials and Make Happy last year, his mental health has been affected. Inside the new show, he looks at this issue.


Bo Burnham Aprons , while more personal than his previous work is still an open book. It's a guy who is deeply concerned about the people he speaks to and clearly demonstrates that what he has to say matters regardless of whether it's always funny.



Burnham's witty and insightful work explores a broad range of topics, from the frustrations of family connections through Facetime to the obsessions with reaction videos and Twitch streams. He hasn't lost his touch in skewering pop culture or the obsession we have with self-image however, it's clear that his ideas are much larger than the personal stories he's had.


The best bits of the special attention paid to the battles he has with depression and anxiety. The track "Big Bag of S**t" about feeling like you're a big bag of rubbish is hilarious and sad. A bit about fearing the possibility of dying during lockdown is eerily prophetic. The video he put together to help his wife cope with the prospect of dying is uplifting and inspiring.


This one has some humor that isn't as abrasive to his previous material. It's a plus for those who are scared of watching. It's worth noting that he's not shy from the more sexually explicit parts. He knows how to give a laugh and he does not hesitate to take on a risk now and again.


The program can seem somewhat disjointed, as it moves from one subject to the next. The joke about the friend who does not believe in sex soon turns into one of a gay female who is in love with white men. It's hard to know the direction Burnham is going with these theories, but it's important to remember that the themes are more important than any particular joke.


Inside is a daring and important work that shows Burnham has a lot of talent that is still in him. It may not be his best-loved, but it is an in-depth and thoughtful investigation of the psychological effects COVID-19's epidemic has had on us. This is worth your time.
