Minecraft player invests two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News
17 October 2014
A Delaware student spent two years developing an imaginary world he named Titan City in Minecraft.
Titan City is constructed out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and includes 96 buildings.
Duncan Parcells says it has taken the two years he spent to construct his project, working an average of five hours per week working on the project.
His first construction was a virtual replica of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to perfect.
The 19-year-old, however, says Titan City is not a realistic model of New York.
He told the BBC, "It's inspired New York."
"A lot of people think it's a recreation but it isn't."
He initially built the city with the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version which, he claims, offers more construction possibilities.
Mr. Parcells plans to add an airport as well as an arena for sports.
"I guess it's an outlet for architecture and energy," he said.
"Architecture has always been something that I have always loved. I am most satisfied with Victorian-style buildings which are less modern and more art deco.
"A lot of people walk by and want to walk around and explore, or assist with the building. Many of them help to construct roads.
While Titan City has received a warm reception online and offline, Mr. Parcells stated that up to now he has kept his virtual world separate from his everyday life.
"I've kept it secret It's like a second life I'm not able to talk about but people are starting to inquire," he said.
"My parents think it's cool - I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it so much."
Microsoft recently announced that it will purchase Minecraft Studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had surpassed 100 million players in February 2014.
After the initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. Bwbf However, in-game purchases are available.
The game takes place in a virtual universe composed of cubes of various materials. Almost all of these can be used to build blocks and a few can be transformed into usable raw materials (wood diamond, iron, etc.).
The game requires you to survive by using blocks to construct shelters and transform raw materials and their combinations into objects (swords and armour, bows, etc.) to beat the various monsters in the game.
