Clerical Streetwear - Priest costume
Clerical clothes are the street or everyday dress of Christian clergy. Clerical clothing is different from vestments which are only worn during liturgical services by priests or other clergy. It is important to distinguish between these two types of clothing, because it indicates the role played by each wearer in a liturgical ceremony.

The traditional priest's costume includes both a cassock, and a cingulum. The cassock, a long-sleeved shirt that is close to the body with a buttoned closure, has long sleeves and is worn in a tight fitting style. The cassock is usually black, but other colors can be worn according to the ecclesiastical ranks. The pope wears a white cassock, while cardinals (except during penitential season) wear scarlet. Bishops wear black with a red trim and lower clergy wear plain black cassocks. The cingulum, a chain-like neck collar, hangs from the inner cassock's neck and covers the cross worn by the priest around his waist or chest. The cingulum usually has gold or silver beads.

The GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal) also states that the ornamentation of the priest's vestments must be "delicate and tasteful" to avoid detracting from his role as the leader of the worshipping congregation.

The cassock is also traditionally worn with a clerical cap. Roman Catholics wear the biretta, while Anglican clergy dons the Canterbury cap. Pastors in Norway will wear a ruff. This is a stiffly starched, large collar that extends over the full collar of a clergyman. Russian Hieromonks wear a klobuk, while other monastics may wear a kontorasson (or zostikon).

Purchase a black shirt with buttons and tuck into your pants or suit jacket. Fold the tip of the shirt's collar so that it is even with the rest. Cut a long strip of elastic that will wrap around the collar of your shirt and hold it in place. Cut a 6-inch strip of posterboard and tuck under the collar. With the elastic holding it in place, the finished priest costume will fit comfortably under your shirt collar. Add a cross to the outfit. This costume is instantly recognizable, and will make an impression on all your party guests.
