Priest Costume - Clerical Streetwear
Clerical clothing is the everyday or street dress of Christian clergy members. It is distinguished from vestments, which are reserved for liturgical use and can only be worn by a priest or other cleric when celebrating mass. The distinction between these types of clothing is important, as it distinguishes the wearer's role in a liturgical service.

The traditional priest costume includes a cassock and cingulum sash. The cassock is a long sleeved garment that fits close to the body and has a button closure. It is typically black, although colors may be worn depending on ecclesiastical rank. The GIRM, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, also notes that any ornamentation on the priest's vestments should be "tasteful and discreet" so as not to detract from his role as leader of the worshipping community.

A clerical hat is traditionally worn with the cassock as well. The biretta is typically worn by Roman Catholics, while Anglican clergy wear the Canterbury cap. For a simple DIY priest costume, purchase a black button down shirt and tuck it into pants or a suit jacket. Fold the tips of the shirt collar under so they are even with the rest of the collar. Then cut a strip of elastic band that is long enough to wrap around the shirt collar and secure it in place. Finally, cut a six inch strip of poster board and tuck it under the shirt collar. The finished priest costume should be able to fit comfortably under the shirt collar with the elastic keeping it in place. You can add a cross necklace to finish the outfit.
