The Master of Mysticism Needs a New Doctor Strange Costume
A disciple of mysticism and powerful magic, Doctor Strange has no problem with transcending the material. However, the master of the multiverse still has to put on his best suit when it comes time to do battle. And that's where costume design plays a major role. As Benedict Cumberbatch enters a new reality in the upcoming Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, the Master of Mystic Arts needed some fresh threads to wear. That's something that the film's costume designer, Graham Churchyard, addressed with a mandate coming straight from Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feige.

As the film's press release reveals, Feige wanted to upgrade the costume to "give him more of a superhero chest without going too superhero." Churchyard added that the resulting Trench Coat of Levitation was able to maintain the character's signature style while adding grandeur with a simple addition of an ornate gold vest and the Eye of Agamotto. It's a fitting look for a hero who has mastered the art of defying the laws of space and time.

This version of the Sorcerer Supreme was first introduced in Mark Waid's 2018 Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme run. The monochromatic outfit was skin-tight with armor-like attachments, and it looked more like the uniform of a superhero than the clothing of a magic user. It was a brief incarnation of the character, and his next appearances reverted to his iconic blue and green costume.

One of the most striking differences between this and other versions of Doctor Strange is that this one lacked any sort of hood. While the original Steve Ditko design featured a hooded tunic, later designs paired this with a mask to create a more traditional superhero look. However, without the hood, this was a slick, cool, and effective outfit that captured the magic of Doctor Strange.

The Silver Age Doctor Strange costume was a controversial look that eschewed the robes of the past for spandex. This was a sleek, stylish design that was both cool and unique, but it was also not as effective as the classic robes. It was an uncomplicated look that did the job, but it was not as iconic as Ditko's original design.

This version of the Doctor Strange costume was a nod to his afterlife. While it was not as cool as the classic, this incarnation did have an interesting feature: a cloak that allowed him to see the dimensional walls of the Multiverse. It was a nice touch to the afterlife premise of this version of the character, and it added to his overall ethereal look.
