The Master of Mysticism Needs a New Doctor Strange Costume
Doctor Strange is a master of mysticism. He has no problems transcending materiality. When it comes to battle, however, the master multiverse has to wear his best suit. It's here that costume design has a huge impact. In the upcoming Doctor Strange - Multiverse of Madness film, Benedict Cumberbatch will be entering a different reality. He needed new clothes to wear. Graham Churchyard was told by Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige to create a new look for the Master of Mystic Arts.

Feige's desire to give the character a "superhero chest" without becoming too heroic is revealed in the film's release. Churchyard says that the Trenchcoat of Levitation, which was created as a result, maintained the character’s unique style while adding grandeur to it with the simple addition of the ornate gold Vest and Eye of Agamotto. It's a fitting look for a hero who has mastered the art of defying the laws of space and time.

The first time this version of the Sorcerer supreme was introduced, it was in Mark Waid’s Doctor Strange: Sorcerer supreme run from 2018. The monochromatic outfit was skin-tight with armor-like attachments, and it looked more like the uniform of a superhero than the clothing of a magic user. It was a very brief appearance of the character. His next appearances returned to his blue-and-green iconic costume.

The absence of any hood makes this Doctor Strange version stand out from others. The original Steve Ditko concept featured a hooded robe, but later designs combined this with a face mask to give a more classic superhero look. This was a slick outfit without the hood that captured Doctor Strange’s magic.

Silver Age Doctor Strange's costume was controversial, as it eschewed traditional robes in favor of spandex. This was a sleek, stylish design that was both cool and unique, but it was also not as effective as the classic robes. It was a simple look that got the job done, but it wasn't as iconic Ditko’s design.

This Doctor Strange version was a nod towards his afterlife. This incarnation, while not as cool as its classic counterpart, did have a unique feature: a special cloak which allowed him to see through the walls of the Multiverse. It was a nice touch to the afterlife premise of this version of the character, and it added to his overall ethereal look.
