Cody Johnson wasn't always the best at navigating Nashville’s soul-sucking machines. Texas country artists are known to have entered Nashville's scene with a sense of independence and fidelity to their regional roots, and then resigned themselves to the machine. Cody Johnson hoodies ended up wasting their best work.

Johnson, fortunately, is not one of those artists. The debut album from his major label, Ain’t Nothin’ To It, is just as country and could even be better than any other release.

The best song on the album is the sentimental and well-written Monday Morning Merle. It could easily be the anthem to anyone who's been to a Rodeo. It has an authenticity to it, which makes you believe that it's a genuine reflection on the singer's experiences and not just a generic country song. Other songs, such as "Dear Rodeo", and "Ain't No Love Like Mine", show his ability to write about many emotions without losing the country feel.

Johnson is brought to tears by the title track of the album, which pays homage to the legendary rodeo. This is the type of song that fans of all backgrounds and ages will applaud. This is a powerful statement demonstrating the impact that rodeos have had on him professionally and personally.

Although the album contains a few missteps, they are mostly minor and can be forgiven. Johnson is a country boy, so a cover of Long Haired Country Boy may not be that surprising, but it does not feel right to him. This can also be said about his cover version of Taylor Swift's empowering anthem Doubt Me Now.

Cody Johnson, while not the most talented or engaging performer in history, is still a pure country artist. He may not appeal to all, but he has still managed to navigate Nashville's machine without ever forgetting who he is. Johnson is a new artist worth listening to. He has achieved a feat few others have.
