3. Pip expected himself to be dead because he was frightened that his sister would find out that he had stolen the food from the pantry. In the book, it says, "For the time at least, I was saved. I still held on the leg of the table, but clutched it now with the fervour of gratitude (Dickens 27)." He seems worried for his life because he knew that he'd be punished for stealing the pantry items, and he was previously worried of the convict that threatened him against his own will. Pip continues to act in a frightened manner, and he definitely doesn't want to face his abusive sister's actions.
4. The role of humor is shown subtly through the actions that the characters have made throughout the story. In the book, it portrays the sense of humor when the guest, Mr. Pumblechook, drinks the mixed tar water. This humor is almost sadistic in an unusual way, and it continues the story with each chapter that we read. For example, Pip's politeness to the convict was funny because most individuals would be scared, but he was glad that the person enjoyed the food. The role of humor plays an essential role throughout this book, and these tools help initiate a reader's interest.
