Minecraft is a great game for friends to play together. You can play cross-play with Minecraft on any platform so long as they have the same version.



This means that if you have the Java Edition of Minecraft, you are only able to play with other players who have the Java Edition. The same goes for the Bedrock Edition. If you own different versions, you'll need to purchase the other version to play with.



All of the platforms that run Minecraft Bedrock Edition can play together. This includes the Nintendo Switch and all other platforms that run Minecraft Bedrock Edition. These include the Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC and mobile devices. To use these, you will need an Microsoft account. If you already have an Xbox account it will work. You can also sign up for one here for free.



If you already have a Microsoft account, you'll want to make sure that you've added the friend you want to play with on the account. This can often mean inviting a friend to their Xbox Gamertag.



After that's done, here's how you can join in the same game.






Joining a friend's game


If your friend is currently playing in their own session hosted by them, you can join them right through the game. Mail You can join the session of your friend as long as you're friends through Microsoft. Navigate to the Friends tab, and look under "Joinable Cross Platform Friends".



These sessions can only hold eight people at one time.



A pop-up will be displayed in the event that you are asked to join the session. You can accept or decline.






Invite friends to your game


To invite friends, open the menu for start in game. There will be a sidebar asking you to invite friends. After you click "invite," you can add friends from your list to join your game.



You should be aware of which permissions your session has available (visible in settings). You can change it so participants in your session only view your world, or you can let them play freely by constructing and breaking blocks. You can also give them administrative privileges. You can also set these privileges on your own when friends join your session, by clicking the yellow icon next to their names.






Using Realms for Multiplayer


Realms are servers that are accessible 24/7 and require no host to play.



Invites can be sent to your Realm via your Friends tab or invite them via the link if you're playing on a PC. The Minecraft application will launch by clicking the link. Console players will need friends to invite them.



After joining the Realm for your first time, you can return to it whenever and wherever you like from the Friends tab. The Reams you've joined will appear under "Joinable Realms," as long the Realm is accessible. (Keep in mind that Realms are capped at 11 players playing at the time If you're unable to join, it's possible that there are too many people already in the Realm.)
