Atatürk, Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında bir ordu subayıydı. Savaş sonunda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun yenilgisini takiben Türk Kurtuluş Savaşı'ndaki Türk Ulusal Hareketi'ne önderlik etmiştir. Kurtuluş Savaşı sürecinde Ankara Hükûmeti'ni kurmuş, askeri eylemleriyle İtilaf Devletleri tarafından gönderilen askeri güçleri bozguna uğratmış ve Türkleri zafere götürmüştür. Atatürk daha sonra eski Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nu modern ve seküler bir ulus devletine dönüştürmek için politik, ekonomik, toplumsal ve kültürel reformlar başlatmıştır. Liderliği altında binlerce yeni okul inşa edildi. İlköğretim ücretsiz ve zorunlu hale getirildi. Kadınlara sivil eşitlik ve politik haklar verildi. Köylülerin sırtına yüklenen ağır vergiler azaltıldı.[2][3]
Türk Orduları Başkomutanı olarak Sakarya Meydan Muharebesi'ndeki başarısından dolayı 19 Eylül 1921 tarihinde "Gazi" unvanını almış ve mareşalliğe yükselmiştir.[3] Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi'ni kurmuş ve ilk genel başkanı olmuştur.[4] 1938 yılındaki vefatına kadar arka arkaya 4 kez cumhurbaşkanı seçilen Atatürk, bu görevi en uzun süre yürüten cumhurbaşkanı olmuştur.[3]
Mustafa Kemal tarihte oynadığı önemli rolden dolayı pek çok yazar ve tarihçi tarafından incelenmiş ve hakkında 379 eser yazılmıştır. Bu yönüyle hakkında en çok eser yazılan ilk 100 kişi arasında yer almaktadır.
