According to reports, the government of Turkey is investigating claims that Minecraft is too violent.
The game is categorized as appropriate for children seven and over in much of Europe as well as for those older than 10 in the United States. According to the Haberturk website, Turkey's family and social policy minister, Aysenur Islamic, has initiated an investigation into claims that the game encourages aggression. The website says that if the government believes the game to be too violent, they could request the government to ban it on a national scale. The move was prompted by a journalist who revealed to Mrs. Islam that players get points for killing other characters - which includes women and asked what her ministry would be doing regarding it. The Pan European Game Information group, which assigns ratings to computer games, says Minecraft contains "non-realistic-looking violence towards characters which, although human, are not very detailed".
One journalist from a Turkish gaming magazine claims that the ministry's concerns are unfounded. Igralni.Com Kaan Gezer is an Leadergamer journalist, claimed that she's never seen an infant grab a sword and attack people due to Minecraft. "Stories like these can cause the Turkish video game industry to slow down or worsen." Minecraft is extremely popular with gamers of all ages. It reached its 100 millionth user in February 2014. Teachers in some schools in the UK have also played it.
