Benzene, Butadiene, and Other Carcinogens on the Railroad
Many railroad workers are exposed to benzene and other carcinogens. If you have developed a serious illness, such as leukemia for instance, you could be eligible for compensation.
Leukemias occur in blood-forming tissue like bone marrow and lymphatic tissue. CLL (chronic lymphocytic Leukemia) is one of the four primary types of adult leukemia.
Benzene
Benzene is a chemical that can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It is a contaminant of oil that is used to create nylons, plastics and synthetic fibers. It is also used in lubricants, dyes, detergents, paints, drugs and pesticides. It is a recognized carcinogen that causes leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes and lymphomas.
Railroad workers are exposed to benzene through the use of mineral spirits, solvents, and degreasers. When working on railroad cancer settlements or freight cars workers are exposed to exhaust fumes from diesel engines and. Because of this, railroad workers are at a higher chance of developing chronic leukemia.
Numerous epidemiological studies have found an increased risk of leukemia with the increase in exposure to benzene. A recent meta-analysis of 22 studies gave summaries of effects estimates for exposure to benzene and the likelihood of AML or Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
Leukemia lawsuit settlement -analysis reveals that exposure to benzene in the workplace increases the chance of developing these leukemias. However the results for AML and CLL were less than those for ALL. This could be due to the lower rate of reporting for these subgroups in addition due to the lack of dose response with the increase in exposure. The meta-analysis found no evidence of publication bias.
Asbestos
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral has been used to create a variety of industrial products. Its resistance to heat, fire and corrosion made it an ideal material for railroad locomotives and other equipment. Asbestos poses a risk to those who handle it. If exposed to the material asbestos fibers, they can break down into tiny fibers that can become airborne. Inhaling them, they can form a swarm in the lungs. This can result in a variety of serious diseases, including mesothelioma.
Asbestos fibers may cause irritation to the lung lining once they enter the lungs. This irritation can cause an increase in collagen which becomes harder over time and creates plaques in the pleura. This problem can cause chest discomfort and breathing problems.
Fibrosis is yet another form of lung injury that can be caused by asbestos exposure. This scar tissue interferes with the ability to breath. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal.
Contact an FELA lawyer as soon as you are a railroad worker who has been diagnosed with a condition related to asbestos. An experienced mesothelioma lawyer will help you file an application for compensation. To be successful, you must prove that exposure to a toxic substance during the job contributed to your condition. FELA lawyers often work with industrial safety experts referred to as industrial hygienists. They review the products used in the railroad workplace and determine whether the railroad company followed proper occupational safety practices.
railroad cancer settlement amounts is among the many carcinogenic fumes as well as substances that railroad workers are exposed to on a regular basis. Exposure to diesel exhaust has been associated with lung cancer and other serious occupational illnesses in railroad workers, including mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis. Inhaling the exhaust of engines and particulates could cause chronic health issues that may be difficult to treat.
Locomotives are powered by diesel fuel and the cab for locomotives is a small space with limited ventilation. Railroad workers are exposed to diesel exhaust by breathing it into the cab, and then being able to drag it back over themselves and their clothes when they leave the cab. Railroad workers who work in shops and yards may also be exposed to diesel exhaust, because they often come into contact with train and locomotive equipment.
Diesel exhaust contains mutagenic and cancerous substances that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. These chemicals can cause harm to the respiratory system and blood and bone marrow. Researchers discovered that those who had been exposed to diesel exhaust for the longest period of time were at the highest risk of developing lung cancer.
Even after adjusting for smoking and other causes lung cancer mortality was significantly higher in railroad workers exposed to diesel emissions. The Lyon Firm is investigating a number of complaints from railroad workers who were affected due to frequent exposure to diesel exhaust and solvents as well as other industrial toxic exposures.
