The Best Bet Ever
I experienced the best bet ever around 1970 for a few years... other than a fixed game. I don't think any game was ever fixed that I played on and never asked. It wouldn't be an accomplishment or any fun.

Living a mile north of Wrigley Field (Cub's Park) was a big advantage. There were no computers, cellphones or 24-hour off-shore stores... only flags and the right weather report.

I would go to the southwest corner of Waveland and Sheffield in Chicago about 10:30a.m. (there were no Cub night games). There were only flags atop the centerfield scoreboard. link slot gacor If the flags were limp, there would be no play on the total that day... if they were standing straight up, blowing in or out over centerfield and the pitchers were right... it was the best bet I've ever seen then or now.

I'm not sure if the lines were from the East or Vegas, but they would use the weather information from O'Hare Field Airport. O'Hare is about 15 miles west of Cub's Park. I had a woman at Meig's Field Airport that gave me the weather on the advance. She said it was mostly clouds and wouldn't be anything until morning.

The lines were real low around midnight and getting lower. I remember it like it was yesterday. I must have laid it all over my home in Bettendorf, Iowa. I must have watched every plane that came in tanging over O'Hare. There was just something about that place thathettight that made me want to put on the red and blue.

After reaching my numb room, I checked the baseball card for awhile. There it was...the 12-3 Blue Jays facing the rained out White Sox. I cut and untwisted it, because I knew the outcome. I knew it was going to be squeeze-or-fold for me. There was no way I could get it done in my column and my legs would ache from the effort. At 4:30a.m. ( Boulder time ) I fell asleep to " Pound theTemp".

The next morning I lounged about in a chair across the room from the TV, tuned to ESPN, which was playing baseball tribute. There was no sound, but the image on the screen helped. I saw the same team I had backed at pennant stages that I had backed in the Fall Classic. The White Sox won it all. I couldn't wait to see if they could keep it together for the cure. They did, and it helped me. Of course, I lost more than I won. But it was all worth it after seeing that opening scene in Morrison.

8 innings later I watched closely, as Yanks win 99-1. I needed a drink. I needed a drink for my cramping legs. Now, I was hoping the game would last long enough for me to get some sleep. I wasn't going to get any sleep if I had to compete in the race to the bottom. I'm an exhausted mess. I Want to win. I expired about 11:30a.m. (Gambling extended until 3 a.m., wake up for breakfast at 7:30a.m.)

8 1/2 innings later, I was wide awake and on top of the world. I could not have been more happier. I got home and lazily opened the front door, to discover Gus Hansen watching TV in the background. I heard the theme song for The West Wing, "Ar Friendly Choir". I figured he must have a baseball pick.

As I drove past his car, which was missing a wingtip, I thought how wonderful it would be to get some sleep in my own bed. But, in those 8 1/2 innings, I lay in bed after every start, wondering what had gone wrong. At one point, I lay in bed after a start. The only light coming in was from the Lefty O'Rear playing the Toonies. I could already hear the Redsapping' theme song. Did they forget to change the lyrics? I groaned.

I missed the first start of the dogs. They were moving fast, not wanting to hurt their backers. I laid in the bed, unable to get any rest, until 4 a.m.

shedding.

I missed the next start when the blood loss subsided. They were chirping like crazy, when I tried to get a hold of them. I heard them foraging in the yard. I could hear the Redsapping theme song playing in my head. They were calm unlike the previous night, when they practically ran out of grounds.

4:30a.m.

For the next 8 hours, I lay in bed, unable to fall back asleep.
