How to Replace the Ignition Key in a Saab9-3
You'll have to replace your car keys in case it isn't turning. This guide will explain how to replace the ignition key on the Saab 9-3. You will have to replace the key, buy a new reprogrammable cell, and then purchase a new casing for your key-fob.
In contrast to older models, the majority of modern Saab cars use a transponder on the key-fob rather than a physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable battery inside the key-fob can wear out and won't hold a charge for long. This is especially true if you use the same key for the same lock.
A professional locksmith can replace the battery quickly. You can also do it yourself if have the appropriate tools and a bit of patience. The first step is to remove the key-fob out. This is accomplished by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the slot located in middle of the case. It is essential to be careful, as the plastic is extremely thin and can be damaged easily.
Once the case is opened, you can make the new key by combining the lower portion of the old key along with transponder and banana. saab 93 replacement key will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM correctly, which could make a big difference when replacing the sole key for your Saab 9-3.

Unless you have two keys, you will have to take off the dashboard and steering wheel in order to access the ignition. Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, you can remove the dashboard and trim pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash has been removed, insert screws into the hole behind the ignition switch.
The ignition cylinder is equipped with key locks that could stop the vehicle from starting if key isn't in it. If the ignition switch of your 900 isn't working, check the key to see whether it's inside the lock or is stuck in the barrel of ignition. It is also important to rotate your keys and keep them clean to avoid being bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars because they don't use traditional metal keys. The car instead recognizes the electrical signals that come from the key fob through the use of a specific microchip.
If you lose your sole working key fob the dealer will charge the highest dollar for replacing the computer module (known as the CIM). However, we can reprogram your existing computer's EEPROM and set it to accept new keys without replacing it. You'll save more than 50% on the dealer's price! This is the SAAB Key PROGRAM. The metal portion of the classic Saab keys is easy to copy and does not present a major threat to theft of vehicles. The real security is the electronic component in the key-fob, which has a chip inside which recognizes your car once it is inserted into the ignition switch.
Saab's anti-theft system has relied on this technology for over 10 years. It's not as effective as a physical door lock, but it makes stealing your car a lot more difficult. This is the reason why every Saab owner should always have an extra key in their possession.
The majority of new Saabs come with two keys, but they can be purchased from an dealer by using a handheld device, called Tech-2. Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this is NG 9-3 vehicles, with more modern, newer features that require a key-fob.
The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module on those cars if keys have been lost, and cost you top dollar to do it. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys without replacing expensive modules.

If your SAAB 9-3 key fob begins having trouble turning the barrel of the lock it's possible that it's time to replace it. It's rather simple and doesn't need you to visit a dealer. You can do it at home with just a few simple tools.
First, you'll need to prepare the keys for your new car. Before starting, make sure that the anti-theft feature is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and activating the handbrake. Then, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position, which activates the accessories but does not start the engine. Repeat this procedure five times, then leave the key in the on position.
You'll then need to purchase an additional case for your key fob. You can find them at any auto parts store, and they're typically very affordable. Depending on the model, you could even purchase them without electronics.
To open the case, place an flathead screwdriver into the slot that is in the middle. Gently work it. After you have split the case, you will be able to access all the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the electronic components.
