However, as a new phenomenon, little research is reported that examines problem gambling in relation to the proximity of urban casinos (Conway, 2015). Welte et al. (2017), in an earlier study, explained that individuals who live in mature gambling communities (such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City) for more than ten years gamble less than those who do not. This hypothesis has been postulated for destination casinos in mature gambling communities (Hodgins and Petry, 2016; Shaffer, 2005); however, urban casino communities have not been empirically tested using the perspectives of adaptation theory due to the newness of this phenomenon.
However, since the proportion of female participants in the reviewed studies was significantly smaller compared to males, evidence of potential gender differences remains weak. Participation in online communities with positive gambling attitudes is a risk factor for excessive gambling (Howe et al. 2019; Sirola et al. 2018, 2019). A study by Sirola et al. (2019) found that sense of loneliness moderated the association between excessive gambling and daily online gambling community participation in Finland, indicating that lonely problem gamblers are most likely to actively participate in such communities. Online poker communities are mostly used for sharing poker experiences and seeking social reinforcement for gambling successes; these kinds of communities may also increase poker playing and help develop cognitive biases concerning gambling (Parke and Griffiths 2011).
Since we are specifically interested in the role of virtual communities in gambling and gambling-like behaviors, we narrow our perspective of gaming to cover only gaming involving money. As we argued earlier, it is meaningful to include both gambling and gaming phenomena because of their combined monetary features; but, as such, we are also able to compare possible differences among these communities. Consequently, the more general role of online communities in gaming is out of our focus. From a theoretical perspective of virtual communities, the results of this systematic review show that virtual communities in gambling and gaming are grounded on mutual goals, shared interests, and norms. These aspects have been previously noted in studies on online communities (Boellstorff 2015; Preece 2000; Oksanen et al. 2014), and these communities play an important yet different role for gamblers and gamers.

Previous casino studies indicated that urban casinos are placed in communities that already have a culture of gambling (Barnes et al., 2013; Redmond, 2015; Welte et al., 2016b), and, individuals who resided within close proximity to casinos were mostly likely to be problem gamblers (Moore et al., 2011). According to reviewed studies, online gaming communities inherently exist inside the game. This is especially true with MMORPGs (Badrinarayanan et al. 2014, 2015; Ben-Ur et al. 2015; Fang et al. 2009; Gui 2018; Hota and Derbaix 2016; Jin et al. 2017; Park et al. 2018; Pinto et al. 2015). MMORPG playing typically takes place in guilds, that is, long-lasting social groups where players collaborate in order to better game success.

Humans have a basic need for social belonging and relatedness (Baumeister and Leary 1995; Deci and Ryan 2000), which is one of the reasons behind the success of online communities and social media (Keipi and Oksanen 2014; McKenna and Bargh 1999; Reich and Vorderer 2013; William et al. 2000). Following Kozinets’ (1999) fundamental definition, virtual communities (i.e., online communities) consist of groups of people sharing social interactions, social ties, and virtual spaces for interactions. Communities are characterized by shared interests, goals, and norms that unite like-minded individuals (Preece 2000; Rheingold 1993). Indeed, in a virtual environment people have a tendency toward homophily, that is, to seek for and interact with similar others (Centola and van de Rijt 2015; McPherson et al. 2001). On April 6, RNRA launched a public survey to capture candid feedback from impacted members of the community. The introduction to the survey included links to all of the materials prepared by the developers and the city, as well as to RNRA documents raising questions about, and pointing out potential negative impacts from, the proposed development.

Developers have also confirmed the Hudson Yards bid and a plan from Vornado Realty Trust to put a casino at the site of the Hotel Pennsylvania near Madison Square Garden. Each bid is set to come before a six-member board with representatives for the mayor, the governor, the local state Assembly member and senator, the local City Council member and the local borough president. Gambling and gambling-like behaviors can be detrimental particularly when excessive, and lead to severe and long-lasting problems, such as economic difficulties (Oksanen et al. 2018). One nationally conducted study for the National Gambling Impact Study Commission reported that casinos located within 50 miles from individuals’ homes contributed to gambling-related problems (Gerstein et al., 1999, p. 10; Welte et al., 2016a, p. 2). An earlier study reported that 10 miles from individual homes indicated a likelihood of gambling-related problems (Welte et al., 2004). Tong and Chim (2013) also found that the lack of a standard definition, measurement, or tool to define casino proximity, resulted in the terms high and low casino proximity that varied across the studies analyzed in their systematic review.
Developer Thor Equities, the Chicasaw Nation, Saratoga Casino Holdings and hospitality company Legends have joined forces to pitch a casino and hotel in the storied neighborhood. Simultaneously, SL Green and Caesars have created their own website, and their own coalition who support the proposal. The League is leading some of the fiercest opposition to a casino coming to the neighborhood, vehemently fighting a proposal from Caesars and real estate developer SL Green to build one in a tower on Broadway. In the eyes of the Broadway League, the national trade association for the theater industry, a casino should not be center stage in Times Square.

Conway (2015) asserted that the spread of casinos to large metropolitan cities was a deviation from the past when casinos were located in small to mid-sized towns; hence, gaps in the literature on geographic research (p. 21). Hardly any research on urban casinos and how they impact host environments in major metropolitan cities were uncovered. Therefore, this article extends the understanding of northeast corridor urban casino gambling. Several researchers (Philander, 2019; Welte et al., 2017; Welte et al., 2016a; Welte et al., 2016b; Welte et al., 2004; Xouridas et al., 2016), who have studied casino proximity have also reported that this construct could increase the likelihood of gambling participation based on the measure of proximity. However, the construct casino proximity has not been thoroughly evaluated in an urban casino study. One notable difference of gambling and gaming communities concerned the communities’ roles in game-related money use and purchase intentions.
While relevance delineated the applicability of each article for the present review, authority vetted each article to determine academic applicability and peer-reviewed standards. To evaluate currency, Google Scholar was the primary source used to determine the number of citations for each article reviewed (Mensah, 2019). Since reading the full text for each article was part of the eligibility process, an additional 18 articles were found to be ineligible. In total, 55 articles filled the criteria; 60% of them were quantitative, and the rest were either qualitative or mixed method. Out of the articles, 33 were on gaming, 19 on gambling, and only three studies investigated both gambling and gaming. Online gambling and gaming communities have both differences and similarities regarding characteristics, reasons of use, and outcomes of use (see Table 3). Strikingly, at least within this data, no gaming problem forums or communities were identified, as was the case with gambling.
Sugarhouse Casino, now called Rivers Casino Philadelphia, is an urban standalone commercial casino without a racetrack in the Philadelphia metro area. The titles and abstracts of the remaining 99 articles were screened, and this resulted in the exclusion of an additional 26 articles. Eligibility of the remaining 73 articles for this review was based on article relevance, authority, and currency (Browning and Rigolon, 2019) for the inclusion criteria.
