Banana Fish is an excellent example of a story with serious themes that can be entertaining. The show is about gangs, mafia, drugs and various other disturbing topics, however the creators were able to make it work.


The main character is a street boss Ash Lynx who gets involved in exposing a plot involving banana fish, an unidentified drug that can brainwash its users. Eiji OKumura, an assistant Japanese photographer, is Ash's helper. They form a strong bond.


The banana fish cause a variety of adverse effects. This includes savage behavior as well as destructive and aggressive behaviors. This can also cause a sudden rise in blood pressure/pulse, as well as pupil dilation. This can cause someone to go crazy and talk nonsense.


The characters are well written and the series does a great job at establishing the New York urban setting. The plot is good. The only issue is that some of the secondary characters are underdeveloped.
