Types of Ischemic Heart Disease
Ischemic heart disease is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death in the United States. It is caused by the buildup of cholesterol and other materials, called plaque, on the walls of the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. As the plaque enlarges, it can gradually obstruct the blood flow through these arteries.
Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
A gradual narrowing of your coronary arteries, due to plaque buildup, is the most common form of CAD. This narrowing can eventually block the flow of blood to your heart, causing chest pain or a heart attack.

Patients with stable angina are characterized by chest pain that is recurrent and characteristic over time. The pain is generally relieved by rest and the use of nitroglycerin.
Silent Ischaemic Heart Disease
In most people, ischemic heart disease is the result of a buildup of plaque in one or more of the arteries that supply blood to your chest. However, there are some cases of ischemic heart disease in which the plaque does not obstruct the flow of blood to your heart. These people are often called MINOCA, or mild obstructive non-compromised coronary artery disease. Those who develop ischemic heart disease are also at risk for other health conditions, such as heart failure or stroke.
