Women are increasingly breaking down barriers and experiencing amazing success in many sectors. The sad reality is that very few women are working in finance. It's unlikely to change, unfortunately.
Deloitte's insights estimates that 31% of financial industry employees will be female in 2030. This begs the question: why are so few women working in financial services? Farnoush Farsiar While there are many theories as to the reasons for this, we wanted to hear from someone who has worked in finance for a long time. Farnoush Farnoush is a fervent financial professional who is a champion for women's empowerment.
How many women are employed in the field of finance?
The U.S. employs 57% women however just 24% hold jobs in the financial sector. This figure is expected to increase to 28% within the next 10-20 years which is up from 24% currently.
It's not an issue that is only affecting women. Farnoush Farsiar thinks it's an issue that has an impact on the economy. Farsiar pointed out that leadership teams with diverse perspectives are more effective than those who have less perspectives. It's crucial that women be represented in these areas. Farnoush Farsiar But it's also crucial for the country.
There are many reasons women are not included in the financial sector. One theory is that the market for financial services is too competitive and male-dominated for women to break into. A different theory suggests that their mothers and colleagues hinder women from entering career paths in finance.
Farsiar believes the root of the issue lies in the way women are treated from an early age. "Women are socialized at a young age to be caretakers , rather than risk-takers. "We are taught to stay secure and not to take risks. That's not a great way to lead to a successful career in finance."
It's more than just being taught to look after their children. Women also learn to be kind to people. Farnoush Farsiar Farsiar states that women are taught to be courteous, avoid conflict and maintain their differences in check. However, in the field of finance, you must be able communicate your ideas. You need to be able to defend your ideas."
Farsiar Questions Where are the female finance professionals?
The absence of women in finance is particularly evident at the top levels of the business. Women hold just about only 10% of executive-level jobs according to a research study conducted by Pew Research. Only 11.5% are women in the top financial company boards.
This inequality has real-world effects on women who work in finance. Women are less likely to be employed in finance to be promoted than male counterparts.
Good news is that women are slowly increasing their positions in senior positions. Farnoush Farsiar believes part of the increase in women taking on senior roles is due to the #womenshould campaign , which increased awareness about the importance of diversity. Farsiar states that she is convinced that the #MeToo campaign also has had a significant impact. Women are becoming more vocal and calling for changes.
There are hurdles for women getting into finance
Many barriers prevent women being able to enter the field of finance. http://yartube.ru/user/Farnoush.Farsiar6Lccdd22/ A lack of role models is a major barrier. It is lonely for women working in finance to be the sole female in their field.
Farsiar acknowledged that it's a bit nerve-wracking to be the only female in the room. Farnoush Farsiar "You expect to be perfect every time and there should be no errors."
Another problem is the "old boys' club" mentality still prevalent in many finance companies. Farnoush Farsiar This is a reference to the notion that men promote other men and women are not promoted.
"There's a lot of truth in that," Farsiar admits. "I have witnessed it firsthand. Men will promote other men, even if women are more skilled."
This mindset of the old boys can result in sexual harassment and discrimination. Financial women often receive rude comments and unwelcome advances from their male counterparts.
Farnoush Farsiar declares, "It's certain that there is an issue." "Women in Finance are usually treated like objects. It's tough to get ahead when you're treated in this manner."
Lack of flexibility in working schedules is another obstacle. Family obligations are more prevalent among women than for men. They need flexible work arrangements to balance their family and work lives.
"Finance can be a demanding job. It's difficult to keep up with other responsibilities. Women often have to make a choice between their careers and their family."
Farnoush Farsiar These challenges make it extremely difficult to be a senior financial professional and to enter the field. There are numerous initiatives to tackle this issue.
Farnoush Farsiar Thinks There's a bright future for women in Finance
There are many reasons to feel optimistic about the future for women in finance. http://www.turkiyemsin.net/author/farnoush-farsiar9abbcc33/ Many initiatives have been initiated to boost the number of women employed in finance and assist them to reach higher positions.
One of these initiatives is Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) It is a partnership with the World Bank Group and 14 governments. We-Fi helps women-owned businesses in the developing world by providing financing and support.
Farsiar explained, "This initiative is great because it gives women access the tools they require in order to start and expand businesses." It also helps them build networks and network with other female entrepreneurs.
The Women in Finance Charter was another initiative that the U.K. government launched in the year of 2016. The Women in Finance Charter seeks to encourage the inclusion of women in financial institutions.
"The Women in Finance Charter is a significant step in the right direction," Farsiar encourages. Financial companies are being encouraged to act on gender diversity and it's making an impact.
Women are now able to enter the top positions in organizations such as We-Fi and Women in Finance Charter. This is an excellent thing for both the women and financial sectors.
