In addition If a new building is being constructed, all residents must be aware that they need to comply to this code in order to be granted an approval certificate for electricity. If this isn't done, the electrical company will shut off the power to the building and inform the owner their application has been rejected.
National Electrical Safety Code
The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) is a set guidelines and standards that govern electrical installations is an example. It is used by a majority of states and Public Service Commissions across the United States and is also adopted by many jurisdictions outside of the United States.

Canadian Electrical Code
The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) is the standard reference document for the installation, maintenance and operation of electrical equipment. It is a guideline for electricians, manufacturers, construction professionals as well as mechanical and electrical engineers working in the industry.

However, in cases where CSA Standards do not exist or are not applicable the equipment needs to be certified to ULC Standards, which can be found in Appendix A of the Code.
