To check and see if your computer activity is being monitored, you need a rootkit or keylogger software program to check for spyware and malware. A rootkit can be dangerous enough to record keystrokes retrieving passwords etc. And removing them often crashes your system if you are not good at it. For effective result, try executing one or two of these rootkit removers more than once.

Another thing you can do is this...
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete in Windows to bring up the task manager.
Click on the tab that says "Processes" to see a list of processes running on your machine.
Check and compare each one of them with the Process Library to see if they are valid or invalid.
(The library should help you determine the keyloggers or any sort of monitoring running on your machine once you compare them)
Next, download and install Filemon. http://download.cnet.com/Filemon/3000-2094_4-10020837.html
It is a free application that monitors all activity on your computer. The program will show you when your files were opened and read. You can save the log in a file for offline viewing. It also has search capability and filters.
Finally, Install the Firewall Zone Alarm. www.zonealarm.com
I read on several sites that this is the best free firewall for this sort of thing. Here is the link..
