THe Argentine Economy was collapsing and the gov't was a military dictatorship, they've laid claim to the Islands for at least a hundred years but in referendums the Islanders continually voted to remain part of Britian. To keep themselves in power the Argentines invaded hoping it would unite the people behind them and make them forget about the economic woes the country was facing from years of mismanagement. What they didn't count on was Margeret Thatcher as she refused to let them get away with it and sent everything they could scrape up from cruise ships to cargo ships. The Islanders themselves have traditionally been fishermen and sealers and still are today but a large part of the islands are covered in minefields left over from the war and are inacessible. There is a much larger British Military Force on the Islands to this day but both sides have agreed to keep future disputes in the diThe UK had ruled the islands for 150 years but Argentina, which calls them the Malvinas, believed that it inherited them from Spain in the 1800s. It also pointed to their proximity to South America. In 1982, Argentina, which was ruled by a military junta, was facing an economic crisisplomatic area rather than have another shooting war.
