Amazon announces Fire TV, a games and video streaming set-top box
Another mini-console that is Android-based and cheap.
Matt Maguire
Amazon today launched the Fire TV, an Android-based set-top box that supports games and streaming video.
The Fire TV is available from today for $99 and there is a $40 controller available that is required for some games, and allows users to access Amazon's GameCircle social gaming service.
Fire runs "Mojito" - version 3.0 of the Android-based Kindle Fire OS. According to Amazon, that will make it "simple for developers to port their services and games to Fire TV."
It comes with the quad-core Qualcomm Krait 300 CPU with 1.7GHz 2 GB RAM and 8 GB storage. There's also a Qualcomm Adreno 332 GPU as well as a dual-band wireless radio. Ryo mail Two antennas allow for streaming at 1080p over 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi.
The Fire also supports HDMI and optical audio, including support for Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 surround sound pass-through, as well as an Ethernet port as well as a USB 2.0 port.
Amazon says that the Fire TV will not compete with gaming consoles. It is instead targeted at people who don't own a console, but who can play games on their smartphone, tablet or other mobile device.
Games that are available on Fire TV so far include Minecraft: Pocket Edition; Asphalt 8: Airborne and an endless racer inspired by Pixar's Monsters University.
Amazon Game Studios is also developing original titles for the box, including a first-person shooter/tower-defense hybrid called Sev Zero.
Amazon said that the average cost of the Fire TV game was US$1.85. Prices start at US$0.99 and there will be free-to-play games.
2K Games, Disney, Double Fine Productions, Electronic Arts, Sega, Telltale Games and Ubisoft are all making games for the Fire and Amazon has claimed that "thousands" of games would be available by the end of the month.
The device's remote has integrated voice search, and the Fire will let you access images stored on Amazon Cloud Drive, its X-Ray service for TV and movies and its streaming service.
A Twitch app is scheduled to launch soon, along with services such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu, MLB.TV, and the WWE Network.
Pandora, iTunes Radio, and songs purchased from Amazon will be available on Fire TV starting in May.
Amazon does not currently ship the Fire TV to New Zealand.
