Tonic-clonic seizures are a type of epilepsy. These seizures are characterized by loss of consciousness, muscle stiffening and jerking. This type of epilepsy usually affects children.
A tonic-clonic seizure occurs when the brain undergoes electrical discharges, which spreads throughout the body. The seizures usually last about one minute, but can be longer.
Seizures can be classified according to the nature of the tonic-clonic phase, or by evaluating the EEG. In some cases, the person experiencing the seizure may experience loss of consciousness for up to two minutes.
Typical features include a sudden onset of jerking movements, which usually affect the arms and legs. At the end of the clonic phase, the person may void.
It is important to know how to prevent and treat seizures. The most common treatment is medicine. However, some people are able to come off their medicines slowly. Medications are chosen on a case-by-case basis, with the help of the patient's doctor.
Seizures can occur at any age, but are most common in children. Children may be able to outgrow the condition if they receive appropriate treatment. During a tonic-clonic seizure, it is normal to be confused or to feel apprehensive.
In addition to a physical examination, laboratory studies can determine whether there are any underlying conditions that might cause the seizures. Laboratory studies can also rule out toxic or drug ingestion.
