Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't done enough to clean up an underground plume that is contaminated rail yard. And now, the latest tests suggest that the contamination could continue to affect people who live near.
Researchers suggest it could be linked to the increased cancer rates in the region. Two years after the launch of an all-state health investigation Researchers found that there were higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the region around the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote which is a common chemical used to treat wood is also a typical one. It can also cause cancer in those who are exposed to it.
It is a heavy oily substance, from amber to black in color. It has a smoky scent and a burnt taste. It is a coal tar distillation product and has been used for over 150 years as a wood preservative.
It is widely used in the United States to treat railroad ties, as well as other types of woods, like fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings for marine structures. It is also employed to protect log homes and other structures from insect infestation.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that creosote can be a dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause eye and skin irritation chemical burns, stomach pain and burning in the mouth or throat and liver or kidney problems.
Exposure for long periods can cause skin and scrotum cancers. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.
It is thought to be a probable human carcinogen, as per the EPA. It has been linked to several cancers, including esophageal as well as lung cancer.
Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for years, thanks to an old rail yard close to their homes. Railroad Cancer claim that the chemical has contaminated their homes, soil and is spreading underground.
Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and take preventative measures to prevent it from spreading.
In October 2017, a group comprised of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote that was emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil beneath their homes and causing serious health issues.
They are seeking compensation from the railroad to pay the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim they've been harmed by environmental racism and discrimination as well as other types of pollution that has affected them and their families.
Dioxin
Dioxins are chemicals which don't break down in environment quickly and can remain in the air, water soil or sediment for a lengthy period. They can be found in a variety of sources, including natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.
The health effects of dioxin aren't clear at low levels, however there is evidence to suggest that they can trigger cancer and other serious diseases. Dioxin levels that are higher have been linked with an increased risk for organ cancers, heart disease immune issues, and endocrine problems, such as hormonal imbalances. Railroad Workers Cancer Lawsuit can also cause hormonal problems, suppressed immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the most popular way people are exposed is through food and water. They aren't volatile and water-soluble, so they are easily absorbed by the body through the intake of dairy products, meat, fish, and other seafood.
It is important to remember, however, that exposure to dioxins can be detrimental to your health, based on numerous factors such as how much you consume, drink, and the frequency with which you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender, age, nutrition, and family characteristics to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.
Furthermore, the kind of contaminant is also an important aspect. The EPA says that some toxins are more likely to cause harm impact on health than others. For example, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative effect on your health than creosote.
For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also harm the immune system of a person and interfere with the development of healthy bones and teeth.
For years, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a cluster of cancer-related deaths that has been related to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is next to their homes. Friday's announcement by the city's health department claimed that it found cancer-causing chemicals on samples of the rail yard. The announcement said the results were "not encouraging." FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he intends to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan proposed by Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic chemicals that have been used in industrial and household products for over 60 years. After being found to cause cancer and to suppress the immune system, these chemicals were banned in 1979.
Once released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, water, and soil in a variety of areas around the world. They are extremely binders to organic matter, and tend to be persistent which means they are easily transported and accumulated in the environment.
As a result, PCBs are a major concern for the protection of public health and the environment. They are deemed to be a probable human carcinogen by EPA, and have been shown to cause cancer in lab animals.
Some studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly true for children exposed to PCBs in the womb.
The primary route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Because they are the highest in PCBs, fish is the main source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products, and other agricultural products.
Another way to get exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is polluted with PCBs. This could be due to leaks or spills that occur in electrical or other equipment.
Similarly, people can also be exposed to PCBs through breathing the air or through the skin. Railroad Cancer Lawyer can trigger an illness known as Chloracne. It is a small, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that last for several weeks to several years.
The effects of PCBs on the health of humans aren't completely recognized. Some researchers have suggested that they could cause liver or the biliary tract cancers in humans, but further studies are needed to understand how this impacts us.
The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborn babies. Low birth weight has been associated with insulin resistance, or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in the course of. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.
Lead
Lead is a poisonous metal and can be found in many products, including pipes, paints and food containers. The body absorbs it through two major routes: respiratory and oral.
It is a powerful chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other chemicals present in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body and can cause serious health issues like cancer and other diseases.
In Houston the residents who live near a legacy creosote treatment plant run by the Union Pacific Railroad have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked for the assistance of the federal government in cleaning up the railroad's toxic site.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of polluting its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals to humans, such as creosote. The company has been working to get rid of the contamination, but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents believe.
The plume of groundwater that flows below the homes in the affected area is among the most grave consequences of the contamination. A recent study by the department of health shows that the concentration of creosote in soil samples in the rail yard is more than the recommended levels for drinking water.
Another issue is the slow evaporation of creosote in the air. It can cause residents to breathe harmful levels of vapors which could cause death for children and adults.
It is also possible that the vapors are causing cancers in the residents who breathe them in. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on the lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being conducted in the neighborhood.
Railroad Cancer Lawyer is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a terribly sad situation that must be dealt with immediately.
A recent study by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a form leukemia at five times higher rate than the average. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in these neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
