Types of Heart Disease
There are several types of heart problems that can lead to a variety of symptoms. They vary from those that can cause chest pain (angina) to severe symptoms such as a heart attack or stroke.
Coronary artery disease, or CAD, is the most common form of heart problem. It develops when there’s a buildup of cholesterol plaque in the coronary arteries – the blood vessels that supply blood to your heart muscle. The plaque can partially block the artery and decrease blood flow.
When the plaque ruptures, it can form a blood clot that may cut off blood flow to a piece of the heart muscle. When this happens, it’s called a heart attack or myocardial infarction.
Symptoms of CAD vary from mild to severe depending on the amount of plaque buildup and whether it’s blocking an artery completely. Some people experience only mild discomfort that’s usually relieved by rest or exercise. Others have more severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, and extreme fatigue.
