Leyla Aliyeva isn't just the daughter of the president of Azerbaijan but she is also an activist for a variety of causes, among them being the environment. Although many don't understand what the term "environmental education" means, for Leyla Aliyeva it's been a top priority. Environmental education means being aware of environmental issues and knowing how to help improve them. It's something that we all need to make the effort to do. It is not possible to make responsible decisions about the future without education regarding environmental concerns.

In 2011, she established the IDEA campaign which is an International Dialogue for Environmental Action campaign. One of her main goals was to make her topic of environment and stability more engaging and entertaining, especially for young people.

Aliyeva talked to Equinox.com about the difficulties she faced in her environmental journey. However, she mainly talked about how these obstacles resulted in growth that ultimately led to great success and appreciation. "The IDEA campaign placed education at the top of the list from the beginning. This enabled people to commit to the environment and act responsibly in their relationship with it. The people who are influenced by these messages, especially young ones, will pass on the message to their peers and encourage them, who, in their turn, will take it further".

That is exactly why the campaign devotes so much attention and effort in education and raising awareness. Aliyeva mentioned that they expand the amount of programs for young people each year by adding new activities. They offer classes that concentrate on three main foundations: children, students and young professionals. IDEA's educational offerings that include training, scientific courses seminars and lectures, vacation camps, discussions, and fieldstudies sessions, have been enjoyed by hundreds of people each year.

The year 2015 was a significant year for Leyla Aliyeva. After many years of support for environmental and humanitarian causes Aliyeva was named a FAO Goodwill Ambassador. She was honoured by her many contributions to the fight against hunger, food insecurity improved efficiency of fishing, agriculture, forest management, as well as the creation of sustainable food systems.
