Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Create 'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft are not permitted to purchase in-game content, such as worlds skins, persona items and other mods in the form of NFTs.

Minecraft, the most-sold video game, doesn't support NFTs. They "create an environment in which the haves and nots"

In a strongly worded post on the Minecraft website yesterday (20 July) developer Mojang Studios said that the incorporation of NFTs could be incompatible with the game's core values.

"NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership based on exclusion and scarcity which is in contradiction to Minecraft values of creativity, inclusion and playing with others," the company wrote.

"The speculation-based pricing of NFTs and the investment mindset associated with them take the focus off the game and encourages profiteering. We believe this is not compatible with long-term happiness and success for our players."

Minecraft has said that the statement was made in response to the feedback of members of the community who asked for clarifications regarding the studio's position on NFTs and blockchain.

The change means that, unlike many other virtual world games Minecraft will not permit blockchain integrations in its client and server applications. The NFTs can't be used in game to create content, such as skins, worlds, and other items, or other mods.

Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business, said it is also concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs could be unreliable and end up costing customers who purchase them. It outlined scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear suddenly" or NFTs could "be sold at fraudulently or artificially high prices".

"We acknowledge that the creation of our game is intrinsically valuable and we work to create an environment where these values are acknowledged."

The online gaming community has witnessed an increase in interest in blockchain technology like NFTs, a subject that was discussed at Future Human earlier this year.

Companies like GameStop have expressed confidence in NFTs as a significant element in the future of gaming, and has launched its own NFT marketplace.

Other companies aren't all-in. Minecraft servers EA's CEO had previously said that NFTs and blockchain could be the future of gaming, but he recently added: "Right now, it's not something we're pushing for a long time".
