In the new Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor reprises his role as the Jedi master from the Star Wars prequels, although this time around we are catching up with him at a time when he feels defeated and has let his Force powers atrophy. In real life, however, McGregor trained hard to get back into fighting shape: he spent months working out with fitness entrepreneur Tony Horton, founder of P90X, so he would be ready for those lightsaber duels and myriad other stunts a Jedi has to perform.
In a short video which Horton shared on his YouTube channel prior to Obi-Wan Kenobi dropping on streaming, we get a look at what some of that training entailed. The clip of McGregor, Horton, and P90X’s Scotty Fifer includes a glimpse at a workout which targets the shoulders, biceps and triceps, starting with dynamic arm circles to warm up before moving onto pike pushup variations, and finally regular pushups using a floor grip with slow, controlled form to maximize time under tension in the muscle.
“Typically people think that’s a chest exercise, right?” Says Horton. “But this is shoulders, chest, and triceps. You can see here that is nice and tight and getting worked, especially at that slow pace.”
McGregor isn’t the only one in that video who has taken on a physical challenge in the last year. Horton has also been documenting his own progress in chasing his fitness goals, building strength and muscle and looking pretty damn shredded for a man in his sixties.
“As a 63 year old it’s an absolute blast to charge this hard,” he wrote on Instagram in 2021. “My number one priority is CONSISTENCY. Showing up way outweighs intensity. I have good days and bad days just like everyone else, but as long as I do something (even if I have to back way off) it always pays off.”
