Claude Oscar-Louis Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French landscape painter who is considered the leading founder of Impressionism. He influenced modern art and is best known for his series of paintings showing the same subject under different lighting conditions. Some of these works, including the poplars at Giverny, Rouen Cathedral and the Water Lilies, are now among the world's most famous paintings.

During his early career, Monet was influenced by his mentor, the academician Charles Gleyre. He studied en plein air painting with him and his students, including Frederic Bazille, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Although the painters disagreed with Gleyre's style and approach, they all shared a desire to represent scenes from everyday life, rather than conventional historical or romantic subjects.

In the 1860s Monet began to travel to the countryside and paint. In 1867 he met and married Camille Doncieux. She was the model for several of his paintings, including The Woman in a Green Dress and On the Banks of the Seine. After his military service in Algeria ended, he returned to France and concentrated on painting the landscape around Paris.


He became disillusioned with the restrictive standards of the dominant arts organization, L'Academie des Beaux-Arts, which selected paintings for its yearly exhibitions. Along with Mobet , Degas and Sisley, he founded the group that would later be called the Impressionists. In the early 1860s Monet was introduced to Japanese prints, which he found less decorative and more expressive than contemporary European styles.

Monet developed cataracts, which affected his vision. The reddish tone that his paintings acquired during this period is due to the effects of the cataracts. Cataracts may have also enabled him to see ultraviolet wavelengths, which are blocked by the eye's natural lens.

In the midst of World War I, Monet's friend and fellow artist Georges Clemenceau invited him to create an artwork that could lift the nation out of its doom. Although he initially rejected the idea, he ultimately accepted the challenge and created his Weeping Willows. During this period, he also made a number of paintings addressing the death of the young French soldiers. He was awarded the Legion of Honor for his efforts. After the war, he moved to Argenteuil.
