Baz Luhrmann's film traces the King of Rock and Roll through three decades in Hollywood, from maverick Memphis crooner of the 1950s to larger-than-life Vegas performer of the 1970s. To capture elvis costume , costume designer Catherine Martin had to create 90 costumes that not only facilitated movement but also served the practical needs of filmmaking.

The pink suit Butler wears in the tarmac scene, for example, needed to be drapey and have a specific softness in the fabric that lent it an old school '70s feel. The fact that it only has one button up was also a design choice made to accommodate Butler's body movements while he performed, says Martin. The original long cape that was intended to go with the suit is owned by a private collector and displayed at Graceland.

Another standout look from the film is a gold lame Nudie Suit, a mismatched jacket and pants outfit that riffs on gender-fluid decorative ideas that were popular in rockabilly leisurewear at the time. Combining folk themes and vibrant contrasting color schemes with form-fitting silhouettes, this ensemble explores masculine and feminine decorative ideals and is a visual hallmark of the style that would define Elvis' later career.

With this suit, which premiered in the 1974 'Aloha shows' at the Honolulu Stadium and was worn several times on tour and in Vegas afterwards, Martin sought to capture Elvis' "shocking presence." The Egyptian-style embellishment is meant to reference the city of Luxor in Egypt, but with an air of American patriotism that speaks to Presley's global stature and appeals to his fans.

In addition to its cultural resonance, the '74 American Eagle suit is important for its design and construction. Two almost identical suits were made and the first was worn for the rehearsal show. The second was worn for the actual concerts, but its cape was slightly bigger and was replaced by the third version used throughout the rest of the 1974 tour and onward (on stage and in Vegas). The first suit is still with a private collector and the second is at EPE/Graceland. The third cape and belt are owned by a private collector and Ed Parker, respectively.
