Elvis Costume: A Closer View
ELVIS isn't your usual biopic. This meant creating costumes for the principal actor, Austin Butler. Similar to the filmmaker's prior work costume designer Catherine Martin carefully toed the boundary between exact replicas and artistic interpretation, a Luhrmann signature. Martin along with her team of designers spent long hours at Graceland, digging deep into Elvis's personal life to find the subtleties in his clothing. Each outfit reflected a particular scene from the film and highlighted his positive and bad traits.





The outfit with a frog on it Nudie suit embodies the flashy side of Elvis. The style of dress was a blend of folk themes and vibrant contrasting colours that became a hallmark of his later costume for stage. The suit also reflects feminine and masculine design ideals and a fashion trend that Elvis was known to use with striking appliques and sparkling.





The blue suede jacket was worn by Elvis Presley when he performed in the 1973 TV special as well as the Aloha concert was another famous look. The show was broadcast to 1.5 billion viewers via satellite. This look is a precursor to the "Elvis Tuxedo" that is worn by stars like Miley.





Elvis Presley's famous "Blue Suede Jumpsuit" in 1969 was also based on the blue suede jacket. The original design was to be worn in the movie Clambake. However it was then repurposed to be an musical entitled Viva Las Vegas as the script for the film was rewritten. https://www.elviscostume.store/ following year, and the new musical title became a cult hit across the globe. The film's version included an new collar with two pockets on the front and white and red checked pants which were replaced with black trousers, to match the fabric used in stage costumes. Elvis Presley Estate now owns the original outfit, including the blazer, pants and stage outfit.






One of the most dramatic designs in the film was the full black leather suit that was worn by Elvis when he was a teen. The style was inspired by Marlon Brando's look in 1953's The Wild One, but it was upgraded to a slick high-point by Belew. The suit was a symbol of rebellion, sexuality, and the traumatic impact that Elvis made on youth culture - all of which were part of his appeal to a much older audience.





The jumpsuit Elvis donned in 1977 for his live broadcast was the most iconic item of the collection. It was the first time a single performer performed before an audience of a global scale. The world watched Elvis sing from his temple of eternality. It is because of this iconic aura that the jumpsuit remains in high demand today. Bill Belew designed this jumpsuit and it was manufactured by the company that made the jumpsuits Elvis used to wear from 1968 until 1977.
