Elsa is one of the most popular and recognisable characters in Disney's history, largely due to her stunning costume designs. The actress behind the character, Idina Menzel, has become a global icon for her performance and the ethereal beauty of her outfits. Her costumes have inspired cosplay, toys, and different artwork since the release of the movie in 2019.
Despite her frozen abilities, Elsa is an incredibly strong woman. Her character's arc in Frozen is a journey of self-love and acceptance, which is symbolised through her beautiful outfits. Throughout the movie, she wears a range of different outfits, each of which reflects her changing outlook on life.
For example, when she sings 'Let It Go' for the first time, she dons a dress that is both dazzling and highly symbolic of her inner strength. This outfit is a combination of several elements that make it a standout amongst Elsa's other costumes, including a glittering snowflake design and an ice crystal pattern that moves with her as she dances. It's also worth noting that the costume has a built-in cooling system, which is designed to keep the actress comfortable during long performances.
As the film progresses, Elsa becomes more confident in her powers and begins to let her guard down. This is reflected in her clothing, which becomes more revealing. She starts to wear a light purple dress that is more structured than her other outfits and has a trailing train in the back. Her necklace features ice crystals, a nod to her newfound power and strength.
When she is crowned queen, Elsa wears a much more elaborate dress. The colour is darker and more muted than her previous outfits, which may be a reflection of her mood at this point in the story. elsa costume is also far more detailed, with a large ice crystal design covering the entire bodice and a long flowing cape that trails behind her as she walks.
Elsa's final outfit is a gorgeous white gown that is reminiscent of princess dresses in traditional fairy tales. It is also highly symbolic of her accepting her role as the Fifth Spirit, and the lace details on the dress shimmer in the light, further emphasising this.
Elsa's wardrobe has been a key part of the success of the Frozen franchise, and it's clear that the designers have paid close attention to how their costumes move on stage. By using a variety of sheer and shimmery fabrics, they have managed to recreate the fluidity of the animated film in their Broadway productions. This is especially true of the 'Let It Go' dress, which features more than 10,000 beads and is sewn by hand. Despite this, the costume has a weightlessness that is almost invisible on stage. This is partially thanks to the use of a number of old theater tricks, such as a set of stacked boxes that creates the illusion of a larger skirt when Elsa stands up from her seat.
