I found the part where Nyasha develops an eating disorder and has a nervous breakdown most interesting. I think this part shows the psychological impact of a male dominated society and colonialism on Nyasha, who is torn between two cultures and expectations. She tries to rebel against her father’s authority and the norms of her society, but she also suffers from self-hatred and insecurity. She is a complex and tragic character who represents the struggle of many women in postcolonial contexts. I think this part also raises important questions about mental health, identity, and resistance.
I found the part where Tambu’s brother Nhamo dies of malaria the most moving. I think this part shows the tragedy of poverty and disease that affects many people in Zimbabwe. Tambu’s family is devastated by the loss of their son, who was their hope for a better future. Tambu also feels guilty for not mourning him enough, as she resented him for being privileged and arrogant. I think this part also shows the contrast between the rural and urban lifestyles, as Nhamo dies in his uncle’s modern house while his parents live in a poor village. I think this part makes the reader empathize with Tambu and her family and understand their struggles and emotions.
I enjoyed the part where Tambu and Nyasha go to the convent school and make friends with other girls from different backgrounds. I think this part shows the diversity and richness of Zimbabwean culture and history. Tambu and Nyasha learn about different languages, religions, traditions, and perspectives from their classmates. They also have fun and experience some freedom and independence from their families. I think this part also shows the potential and ambition of the girls, who want to pursue their education and careers despite the obstacles they face. I think this part is uplifting and inspiring for the reader.
