Rina Sawayama Pillows
Rina Sawayama, whose name is pronounces "sue-ya-mah," is best known for her work as the lead vocalist of Japan's seminal alternative rock band The Pillows. Her unique voice and idiosyncratic sonic signatures have endeared the group to legions of fans since they came out in the mid-2000s. The band's debut album, FooL on CooL generation produced a massive success in Japan and catapulted the band to international fame. The music of the Pillows was featured in the animated FLCL which earned the band an immense popularity among young viewers.
The sound of the Pillows is defined by the use of synthesizers as well as a mixture of styles, such as punk post-punk, and indie pop. rinasawayamamerch are well-known for their energetic and theatrical live shows. Sawayama wore a silver dress that featured a mock-neck sculpted shape, and paisley designs on her shoulders at their final New York concert. She complemented the look with a pair of pointed black heels and a red cap adorned with blooms.
Hold the Girl is her second album, which was released today by Dirty Hit. Hold the Girl's lead track, the sombre "Minor Feelings" finds Sawayama crooning about love in a style that's poetic and cryptic.
As on SAWAYAMA the songs on Hold the Girl are anchored by Sawayama's precision melody and hooks aswell as her distinctive lyricism. Hold the Girl is significantly less mellow than SAWAYAMA and was widely praised for being one of the most captivating debuts of the year.
The majority of the album sounds like something else. For instance, the funk-pop in "Hurricanes" could be plucked off an early Kelly Clarkson album, while "Imagining" is a thick piece of contemporary garage. The abrupt shifts from song to track undermine the album's main concept of reclaiming one's lost self, rendering its narrative arc muddled.
It's a pity because it was clear this project had huge potential when it was revealed in 2021. 2021's Tiny Desk Performance of Metallica's "Enter Sandman", by Sawayama, was a memorable performance that was a highlight. She also demonstrated her mastery of modern production on her earlier albums.
